Learning Goals & Outcomes: If you have been watching Canadian news headlines you may have seen that many tourism and hospitality operators have been challenged by labor shortages both before, and as we head towards the “after” COVID-19 pandemic. This challenge is not just in Canada, it is across various countries globally. It is also not just an issue in rural areas but in urban areas too. In some news headlines there are generalizations and theories being proposed. This assignment is an opportunity to reflect on the current labour situation influencing the tourism and hospitality, how it impacts the industry in the short and long term and has students collaborating to offer recommendations and solutions based on research, course knowledge and internship experiences. INSTRUCTIONS: This project as several parts. Three are mandatory, one is optional. PART I: Analyze the Challenge Summarize what is happening with staffing in the tourism and hospitality industry (what’s happening, where is it happening). What are the impacts of having labour shortages in the tourism/hospitality industry? Be specific and explain your answer. PART II: Recommendations & Solutions Using a minimum of 4 research sources consisting of academic journals and industry association research (i.e. World Travel & Tourism Council, Hotel Association of Canada, Tourism HR Canada, HospitalityNet etc) address the following: What are three recommendations/solutions your group recommends for the tourism and hospitality industry to solve and/or reduce the impact of the labour shortages. Use research to explain and support your recommendations/solutions. How and why did you select these particular recommendations? How will your recommendations have a positive impact on the operators of the tourism and hospitality industry?
