  • Choose either the essay “Climate of Denial” by Al Gore or “Conservatives and Climate Change” by Jim Manzi and Peter Wehner as representative of the two major prevailing points of view regarding climate change and sustainable energy practices: (1) climate change and sustainable energy practices are critical issues which need the immediate attention of policy makers globally; (2) climate change and sustainable energy practices are not as critical as scientists and environmentalist claim that they are and are too expensive to address right now. You do not necessarily have to use either article in our textbook unless you choose to.
  • Locate at least two more recent articles published in reliable sources which generally agree with the point of view you have adopted based on your own research, and at least one which disagrees with your point of view.
  • Write a persuasive argument essay which explains which author or authors you have consulted have the strongest argument and why. You will need to include quotes from the author or authors and respond to them specifically, but you will need to seek out other sources which disagree with your perspective in order to expand the discussion.

The object of this essay is to practice argument and counter-argument, and to look as objectively as possible at differing sides. The paper should be five pages in length and should incorporate at least six sources. The paper must meet the minimum length and source requirement in order to earn a passing grade, and both a first and a final draft of the paper are required. Bear in mind that there is a late penalty policy which will be applied to any work which is received late.

Note: As with all college English papers, this essay will need to conform to the rules of MLA style for formatting and citation in order to avoid plagiarism. A grade of zero will be recorded for any paper in which evidence of plagiarism is found.
