There are two parts to the Discussion Question Assignment (Part I and Part II).
Important: I encourage you to close your text and any outside sources while you are draft your response.
Super Important: For full points include at least one example from real life (one that is not included in the text).
Part I: There is A and B. Please respond to both parts.
A. Legislative Development Steps:
Describe the steps of Legislative Development. Imagine I am your best friend and you are explaining the steps to me. Rather than listing the steps using rote repetition, how could you summarize the process so I would walk away with a more lasting understanding and the steps really sink in?
B. Choose one of the following questions: (Let us know which question it is you are responding to–thanks!). For full points include at least one example (one not included in the text).
1. Most of us don’t know the full extent of what is included in a bill when it is being drafted. Thus, politicians can take one piece of the bill and argue a position based on that issue alone. With the shift toward more partisan politics, do you think “one-issue” agendas can create problems for policy-making?
2. Give an example of a “perfect storm” scenario where the political climate was just right for a problem and solution to open a window of opportunity. (The example doesn’t need to be health care related).
3. Support or argue against this statement: The role of money in campaigns has gotten out of control. We need legislation to drastically reform campaign finance here in the US.
Part II:
Ask the group a question related to the material we are covering this week: Is there one concept or topic that grabs your attention? What question could you ask to explore a concept from a more “critical” perspective–to dig deeper?
