Description
Basic Assignment: Respond to the following prompt:
Religious fanaticism nearly ruins Orgon. Several factors contribute to Orgon making a fool of himself and almost losing everything to Tartuffe. An older man with a second marriage and a much younger, very attractive wife, Orgon also has a domineering mother, two children who are about to marry and leave the household, a saucy maid who bosses him around and makes him feel incompetent and out of control, and a know-it-all brother-in-law who also makes him feel inferior. Add to this his penchant to allow his volatile emotions to rule his actions; Orgon becomes ripe for Tartuffe to pick as a fool. Tartuffe enters Orgon’s world at the precise moment that Orgon feels his age and his life spinning out of control. Under Tartuffe’s tutelage, Orgon learns that none of his family concerns really matter: “Everything that’s written, all that’s sung, / The world, and you and me, well, it’s all dung! Yes, it’s crap! And isn’t that a wonder! / The real world—It’s just some spell we’re under! / He’s taught me to love nothing and no one! / Mother, father, wife, or daughter, son— / They could die right now, I’d feel no pain” (1.5.22–28). By focusing exclusively on heaven and the sky above, Orgon loses sight of his family and finances and nearly turns them both over to the “religious” man he once called his best friend. Therefore, how does Moliere’s Tartuffe, despite its endorsement of theologically grounded political absolutism, represent an important way-station on the road to “Enlightenment,” and why?
