Narrow down your topic based on the annotated bibliography you did in assignment 2.  Make sure that it is focused on a part of your topic that you are interested in. Do not try to discuss every aspect of your topic or you will not be able to say anything worthwhile. Be specific, do not write only a broad overview of your topic. Find a particular area of interest and write about that. Remember, you researched your topic during your annotated bibliography, so you should have a good working knowledge of your topic to discuss here.

– For example, you can research on the impact of exercising on cardiovascular diseases. Ensure you cite at least 3 of the sources used in the annotated bibliography.

See the criteria below.

Criteria (make sure to include these in your essay):

– An introduction that includes a hook to grab the reader’s attention, forecasting statements to give the reader a roadmap of your essay, and a strong, clear thesis statement to give your essay a theme.

– 2-3 related main points that you discuss in your body paragraphs.

– Arguments, counterarguments, and evidence from your research.

– A conclusion that includes a summary of the main points in your essay, a call to action, and your thesis restated through the lens of information in your essay.

– In-text citations (author YEAR) where appropriate.

– A cover page

– A reference section, properly formatted in APA style (taken from Assignment 2).

Here are some guidelines to get you started:

  • Write a position statement (thesis) that you can use to center your ideas.
  • Make a list of arguments you consider useful to make your point.
  • Select your strongest arguments and arrange them into a logical order (narrow to wide or wide to narrow).

In Assignment 2, you researched a topic and presented your research notes in an annotated bibliography. Now, you are going to add your own analysis. Using the research you did for your annotated bibliography, analyze your topic using your own words, thoughts, and ideas. You can use anything you wrote in Assignment 2 because that was the research portion of this 3 part assignment. You already have notes, quotes, facts, and numbers. Just remember to use an in-text citation (author year) wherever you use this information. This will make your essay better.

The analysis could include looking at a specific part or parts of your topic and discussing them in-depth and in your own words, comparing and contrasting two or more aspects of your topic, making arguments and taking a strong position on an idea about your topic, or discussing a controversial side of your topic.

Traits of analysis:

– Evaluate a part of the topic.
