  1. You can locate a copy of this pivotal story easily through a google search; a link that past students have felt helpful for locating this work is as follows…

  1. Please read the Professor’s Notes concerning this piece…

3- Literary Work :  Locate Critical Research

Part of English Enc 1102 involves gathering research, understanding it, and using it as citations in final papers.  Toward this goal, you will be locating two articles on every story or poem we read.

In this module, you need to locate two critical articles that discuss Kate Chopin’s “Story of an Hour.”  While there are many ways to locate research, most students find it easiest to use a search engine like “Google,” or “LibGuides” on HCC’s web page (please reread the addendum concerning critical research posted on our syllabus page).

Your goal is to find articles that are viable — in other words, avoid Wikipedia, anonymous works, other students’ works, etc. and seek articles by scholars or professors.  You are to post the two articles for full credit.  You are not to summarize them or comment upon them.

4- Literary Work :  “Story of an Hour” Rough Draft

OBJECTIVE:

To demonstrate beginning knowledge of Kate Chopin’s “Story of an Hour” in an acceptably formatted rough draft (please see the addendum concerning rough drafts posted on our syllabus page for help).

  1. Introduction Paragraph: State the title of the piece and the author in the first sentence. State general ideas concerning the piece. End this paragraph with the thesis as the last line. It should state your analysis, three supports, and reason your ideas are important. For instance, a good thesis might be…”By studying the heart, window, and staircase in “Story of an Hour,” readers note that Mrs. Mallard feels imprisoned by her marriage.”
  2. Support Paragraph One: Use transitions and topic sentences to explore the first support mentioned in the thesis. In our example this would be the heart. While you do not have to involve critical sources in your rough drafts, you may want to in order to create enough sentences. You can also use lines from the story.
  • Support Paragraph Two: Create the same type of paragraph as Support One using the symbol of the window.
  1. Support Paragraph Three: Create the same type of paragraph as the other Supports using the symbol of the staircase.
  2. Conclusion Paragraph: Restate the introduction using different words. Here is an example of a solid rough draft based on that outline that would earn full points.
