For this assignment, you will either compare and contrast OR you explain cause and effect from a topic of your choice (but not both – just choose one paper to write). It will be up to you as to whether you will follow the point-by-point or subject-by-subject method. As we have already discussed, most writing is composed of more than one mode of writing. Your assignment should incorporate at least one more mode we have covered thus far in the semester (narrative, description, example, definition, cause and effect). Your audience consists of your fellow students. You are writing to them in order to demonstrate similarities and differences or consequences to choices in your chosen topic. Remember, not everyone in our class will know what you are talking about so be sure to include at least 3 points of comparison and provide a clear explanation of the subject.
Your essay should begin with an introduction that tells your reader what you are comparing and why. You should orient the reader with your topic with a clear, solid description and refrain from stating your persona perspective on your subject. Your conclusion should not repeat what you have said in the introduction, but should tie up loose ends and explain why this value or issue will continue to be important to you. Your essay should also include a descriptive title that tells the reader what the essay is describing. Failure to include a title will cost you 5 points on this assignment.
Grading Criteria:
Clear organization and use comparison and contrast method.
Correct grammar, punctuation and spelling and correct MLA formatting.
Strong thesis statement – state your subject and why you are writing.
Details – do not assume your readers know what you mean! Describe the subject as if no one else has ever heard of it and you are explaining it for the first time.
