Compare the Great Pyramid at Giza with
Stonehenge
Part I: The Discussion Post
Present your ideas in a manner that is both specific and descriptive yet concise. Begin
by making your own visual comparison of the images and researching information
described within the instructional material. Take time to reflect on the two structures.
Consider the context of time-period, geographic location and culture however, go
beyond the obvious, such as one being in Egypt and one being in England.
Word Count
Keep your post between 200-250 words.
Develop your ideas using notes
Write out and check your text for grammar and spelling before posting. Pick two
similarities and two differences to write about and elaborate on. Include specific facts or
characteristics to support your conclusions. Identify each similarity or difference as
either a ‘fact’ or ‘convincing speculation’. Go beyond your initial ideas which tend to be
the most immediate and obvious comparisons.
Review and edit your text prior to posting
Present developed thoughts, instead, which demonstrate sustained observation,
knowledge and reflection. Include an introductory sentence. Avoid reliance on ‘filler
material’ which does not support your comparisons.
Compare parallel attributes, characteristics and information
Do not compare the height of one structure to the material of the other. Keep the
comparison focused on parallel attributes, characteristics and information.
Address the following
- Specific Visual characteristics: these may include the shape, layout or footprint area.
- Formal Aspects: material, size and height, and placement or location.
- Reasonable Theories regarding the purpose or meaning of the structures and what
they may signify. - The length of time they took to construct or the process of construction, techniques
used.
Additionally, you may refer to the following: - Factors effecting the current conditions of each or the level of preservation over time.
- Factors contributing to or limiting what we know about them.
- The length of time they took to complete, the process of construction and technique
used.
Format
Write in complete sentences. Compare parallel attributes, characteristics and
information.
Part II: Comment on and Contribute to another student’s
Post
Respond to another thread after posting your own comparisons. This should be between
2-4 sentences. Be specific in addressing the student’s post. Contribute to the discussion
by engaging in the conversation and adding to it. Follow all previously stated guidelines
for peer-post comments.
