An element in plane stress on the fuselage of an airplane is subjected to compressive stresses in the horizontal direction and tensile stresses in the vertical direction (see figure 1). The shear stresses act in the directions shown in the same figure.
(a) Use the stress transformation equation to determine the stresses acting on an element oriented at a clockwise angle of 40° from the horizontal.
