“None of Our Business?” in the Harvard Business Review, 85 (12) Please refer to the attached copy of Roberta Fusaro’s article, “None of Our Business?,” which was published in the December 2004 edition of the Harvard Business Review. This fictional case describes a pioneering effort to use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to inform a customer relationship management approach in a youth-oriented clothing chain, and begs the question: How far is too far? To prepare for the discussion, you are to read the article, prepare a synopsis of its main points, and then add any additional observations or discussion points that you feel to be pertinent to our discussion. While this article doesn’t contain any formal discussion questions, consider some of the following as points of consideration: How would a SmartCap work? What is the extent of the benefit to the customers? What is required of the customer? What data would be collected? Who controls the data that would be gathered, Raydar or KK? Could the data be damaging if hacked? Can security be guaranteed? Does the data and information need to be secure? In your estimation, where is the line between being customer oriented and being creepy? What causes you to make that distinction? Given what you know about KK’s stores, what other things would need to be done to make this system effective? Are there other uses of RFID that may better serve the company? What are the ethical concerns in this case? What legal concerns are there? Trust issues? Privacy issues? How should these concerns shape the decision? What responsibility does the CEO of Raydar have in this? Whose interests should he represent? The shareholders? The stakeholders? The parents? The kids? How should he reconcile these perspectives? Final question: What would you do if you were the CEO of Raydar? Why? Over the course of the discussion, we will try to address these and other questions, and will consider other relevant points, as well. It is recommended that you try to reference material from the text; you will probably find Chapters 5 and 8 to be useful from a technical perspective, but Chapter 9, which deals with privacy and security, may also help you with the less tangible aspects of the case. It is required that you reference material from the text, and you should also bring other information from previous coursework, research and personal experiences into the discussion.
