Description

Topic: The Asian financial crisis began in July 1997 in Thailand. The crisis affected a total of 13 countries including Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Laos, Malaysia, The Philippines, Brunei, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan. In this paper, I will focus on the economic and political events that led up to economic failure in Thailand, and later throughout Asia. Aim of the Power: The Asian financial crisis was a series of currency devaluations and other events that started in the summer of 1997 in Thailand, spreading to many Asian countries. The currency markets originally failed starting with the Thai Baht. This was worsened when the Thai government decided to no longer peg the Thai Baht to the US dollar, and let the market decide the value of the currency. This resulted in the Thai Baht being devalued by up to 40% and caused many Asian stock markets to crash. This paper will look more into the fine details and decisions that led to this financial crisis throughout Asia, as well as the effects that could be felt in the United States economy. Please see the attached for requirements for paper and more info
