The second phase of this assignment builds on the organizational profile developed earlier by digging deeper into the organization to consider how the relationships between organization design, organizational culture, core competencies and organizational performance effect operational, financial and competitive advantage. In Phase Two, students will more richly consider their chosen organization’s current sources of competitive advantage, as well as the sustainability of that advantage. Students will be asked to identify and apply relevant course content to help them analyze whether and how their organization’s current structure, culture, and core competencies could be improved. The aim of this second phase is to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how an organization’s strategy is built and sustained, thereby providing a basis for competition in its environment. Thorough support for any position taken will be expected. Proposing strategic changes (or proposing no change) comes with costs and challenges, and these should be considered in light of the materials discussed throughout the semester.

 

It is expected that each group’s Phase Two report will be tightly integrated with its previous report, and build on the ideas previously expressed in response to the feedback provided in the Phase One review. Each group’s report will be expected to contain text ranging between 15 and 20 double-spaced pages in length, but each report should not exceed 25 total pages (including all references, appendices, title pages). The general format of the reports will conform to the APA style guide, with specific formatting guidelines provided later in this syllabus. Each group’s Phase Two report will be evaluated based on the degree to which:

 

• The report insightfully, creatively, and thoughtfully integrates relevant course concepts and rigorously applies analytic tools to the examination of the organization that you have chosen to study.

 

 Please consider the originality of your analysis, the relevance of your approach, and the rigour with which you apply your analysis to the organization.

 

• The report integrates and extends the theories, ideas, and approaches discussed throughout the semester as presented in the text and during lecture sessions.

 

 Please use care in understanding the difference between referencing concepts and applying them.

 

• The report is professionally written. To what extent would your paper be recognized as a senior undergraduate composition?

 

 In addition to the basics such as spelling and grammar, please consider factors such as the structure and logic of the arguments that you present, and the degree to which the paper is fluidly and consistently written.
