Case Example 2- Liam READ THIS CHILDS CASE
Liam is 18 months old and is the only child of a young single mother (17 years). They live “at home” with the mother (Liam’s grandmother) and two younger siblings (Liam’s uncles). The mother is attending secondary school and Liam will be entering child care for the first time as a subsidized space has just become available. The family is struggling financially while trying to accommodate everyone’s school and work schedules. Liam has been walking since he was 14 months however is not able to get up off the floor without adult support. He has limited verbal skills (one word utterances) and is having a hard time adjusting to child care expectations, schedules and routines. Liam is described as active, curious, caring and funny by his family, however the childcare centre notes he is “clingy” with the educators, does not play with others and wants to be held at all times. Liam loves the outdoors, books and anything related to transportation or dinosaurs. The family is not concerned about his development however are feeling exhausted as Liam currently only sleeps 2-4 hours a night. The mother and grandmother have both agreed to monitor the following areas:
THESE ARE HIS GOALS
- Increase ability to use 1-2 word utterances
- Increase ability to play alone for short periods of time
- Increase ability to get to his feet without support
