Description
Carefully read these two primary sources:
- Jackson’s Rationale for Removal (1829)
- Responses to Removal, Elias Boudinot (1826)
Both can be found under the ‘Primary Sources’ section in Module 11 on Jacksonian Democracy.
Then answer the following questions and post your answers in your Initial Post. Respond to the post of another to complete the assignment. Note the deadlines for both types of posts, above.
The Questions
Where do Boudinot and Jackson agree? That is, what common ground do they share? Draw on BOTH sources to back your claims, using quotations.
Where do the two men differ? Be specific. List and discuss these differences, again, drawing on the sources, using quotations.
In what way does the textbook shed light on a better understanding of both documents — Jackson’s and Boudinot’s? Cite the book, giving page numbers, and make connections that are significant.
Pretend that you are interviewing both men. Armed with what you know of Indian Removal under Jackson, of Jackson the man — what two probing questions would you ask each man to better understand them and their historical situation. (2 men, 2 questions each: Total — 4 questions) Think like an historian.
