Be sure to fully answer each part of the assignment you select. Provide citations for your sources. Answers should be a minimum of 400 words.
- In his article “The Politics of Children’s Literature: What’s Wrong With The Rosa Parks Myth”, originally published in the education publication Rethinking Teaching, Herbert Kohl addresses the problems he feels are created by telling the story of the bus boycott as being simply the result of one person’s mistreatment and personal reaction rather than part of an organized plan to attack segregation. Kohl states this approach is “a thorough misrepresentation of the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery and an insult to Parks as well. There are a number of resources available online for teachers who are addressing the Civil Rights Movement in their classrooms. Using at least three sources, identify three myths (or oversimplified versions) of the bus boycott that are common in elementary or middle school curriculum. Briefly explain the dangers of perpetuating those myths, and how teachers can adapt their teaching materials to give a more comprehensive view of the boycott and the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
- On page 243 of Thunder of AngelsD. Nixon is quoted “King had risen to the top”. He acknowledges the very public role King had in the boycott but also some of the tensions building among the leadership of the movement with that statement. Why did some of those active in the Montgomery Bus Boycott resent the media’s coverage of King? Why did King receive so much attention from the media? How did the increasing access to television affect King’s public image? In your opinion, was this a positive or a negative for the movement as a whole? Use at least one source that supports your opinion. For example: I think was a positive and according to John Smith in “Hurray for the Movement” the media image created….
