Assignment One requires that you continue the process of narrowing the focus of your potential scholarly research project. The task requires that you produce a compelling argument for the project by identifying and defining key concepts, ideas and theories, while at the same time synthesising and evaluating existing research connected to the problem.
Assignment One has the following components with recommended percentage of the total (2500 words) provided – please use separate headings for each section.
- Problem statement (less than 5%): Using hurdle task feedback, combined with any subsequent understandings gained from your literature review, make adjustments (where/if required) to your problem statement previously submitted in Week 2.
- Research question/s (less than. 5%): Briefly articulate the broad aim of your project and a draft research question/s. Ensure that your research question is not overly ambitious and can be answered in the limited timeframe of a single school term (approximately 10 weeks).
- Review of the Literature (approx. 60%): Conduct a critical analysis of six research articles selected from high quality academic peer reviewed journals. While each article should in some way be connected to the problem/issue you have identified, the degree of overlap will vary depending on your topic or discipline area. It is critical to remember that this is a literature review and not an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is merely descriptive, whereas this review of the literature needs to identify key themes, issues, Page 6 of 13 Version: Semester 1 – 2023 anomalies and limitations across the papers reviewed – Refer to Canvas Modules, the Canvas AT1 overview presentation and your required text by Creswell (Chapter 3 – Reviewing the Literature).
- Synthesis (approx. 30%): Discuss the key concepts, theoretical foundations and or relationships across the selected six articles and how these relate to your potential scholarly research project and help frame your understanding of the issue/s involved.

Learning outcomes assessed: LO1: Identify, analyse and synthesise quality educational research literature (GA3, GA4, GA8, GA10; APST 6.1, 6.2, 6.3) LO3: compose extended texts using sophisticated and scholarly academic communication forms including data representation and English language proficiency (GA9, GA10; APST 6.3).
How to submit: Assignments are submitted electronically through the Turnitin tool by selecting the appropriate link in the Assessment Module. Turnitin is an online originality checking tool and grading facility. Do not submit cover sheets. Students are encouraged to submit assignments to Turnitin early and to get feedback on the originality of their submission. The Turnitin program will provide an originality score. While normally a score above 6% on any one source would attract attention – we understand you will be resubmitting components (i.e., your problem statement) and hence a score higher than this will be expected.
Return of assignment: Feedback and assessment outcomes will be provided through the Turnitin System. You will need to access the submission site to read the online feedback which will be provided. Dates for the return of feedback are available via the Turnitin portal where you submitted the assignment.
Assessment criteria: Grading is criterion referenced. Grades are provided online on a high distinction to unsatisfactory scale (HD, DI, CR, PA, NN). Please refer to the Appendix for assessment criteria.
