Due Date: The recommended due date depends on the type of company or product you are
investigating. Here are some examples:
A Bank’s investment product – investigation focused on fossil fuel company investment – May 19
A tourism operator – investigation focused on relationship with local Indigenous Peoples – May 26
A clothing manufacturer – June 16
A company claiming to be part of the circular economy or working on becoming part of the circular
economy – June 16
Choose a company or product that you are interested in learning more about in terms of their
sustainability. Some examples might be a cleaning or cosmetic product that you use or have been
thinking about using, a company that you purchase from regularly, or an item of clothing or material that
you are wondering about the sustainability of (e.g., denim).
Investigate the company or product. The following questions may be used to guide your investigation.
Not all questions will apply to all companies or products.
How is the product/company branded? Think about things like what packaging looks like, what
slogans are used, or what message they convey.
What does that branding mean to you? What does it imply?
What types of sustainability claims does the product/company make? This may require some
digging, especially for companies. Some specific areas you may want to consider include: do they
participate in the circular economy, what happens to the waste, are they participating in any ethical

sourcing or production programs, do they engage in safe labour practices
Research the company’s reputation. There are some different sites for this depending on what type
of company or product you are investigating. Here are a few sites that you can start with:
Violation Tracker
Good On You (Fashion)
Corporate Knights Global 100 List
Shop ethical
You also might find helpful information in one of the databases or websites listed in the
MacEwan Library Company & Industry Info. For example, you can look up recent news for
public US companies in Mergent Online.
If you complete the circular economy topic option you may want to focus your analysis on how the
company participates in the circular economy
This is a useful guide on steps to take to tell if a brand is sustainable.
Submit a summary of your investigation including:
What company/product and why
Evidence of reviewing information on the company’s website
Evidence of reviewing information about the company/product and their reputation on at least one
third-party site
Information about the company or product’s materials/sourcing/ethical practices
Discussion of the implication of your findings
Don’t forget to cite your sources.

and the Company Investigation assignments. You are welcome to combine these two assignments as well
(totals 20 points) because they complement each other.
