Writing: an essay of six ( 6) or more pages. Write an essay making the argument,
following Toulmin’s system, that there is an important problem to be solved. Besides
that, you must find the place where the problem exists and learn about both the place
and the problem. Your job is to research a place – community, city, state/province, or
country – other than RMU or the topic you researched for Essay #2. Then, learn about
a problem this location is facing and try to persuade someone, like a mayor, president,
or business owner, a non-profit’s CEO, or a ruling council, like a court, legislature, or
stockholders, how you suggest they should fix it.
Your Audience must provide the best possible opportunity to take that the direct, specific
action, the Claim, that you want to persuade them to do. Do not write to “America” or “all
students”, for example. The audience may be hostile to your idea. At a minimum, you
must anticipate some resistance so you will need Support, evidence and reasoning, to
overcome it. This issue should not be an obvious one such as “Say No To Drugs”. You
need a topic that will challenge you to think critically and do significant research.
As part of your research, you must at least have 5 (five) research sources in your
References. That does not mean you will simply have five in-text citations but at least
that many separate, reliable sources of information, at a minimum. These sources will
assist you in establishing the context of the situation, your evidence, and/or the position
of your opposition.
The essay may have a multimodal format, but that is not required.
If you wish to, you may use many types of sources of information, such as interviews,
newspapers, the Internet, or books. See our Glossary for the types of sources.
Documentation must be, as always, in the APA References style. Use the Writing
Matters handbook (Chapter 19) or the Purdue Owl (linked to our Blackboard page) for
examples and explanations.
We will also require an Abstract of no more than 250 words, on its own page, with the
essay and the essay will follow basic APA formatting, including an APA cover page. Be
sure to also use Turnitin.com, as previously directed, through Blackboard.
You will write a Proposal, stating your topic, the audience you will address, and a plan
for research. This is similar to the 2nd essay’s “description”. It is a one-two page text,
like a letter, addressed to the Instructor, due by Thursday, March 21st. It may be
revised as often as needed. It’s best not to wait. It will not be graded, but, after review,
can be in the Journal. We’ll discuss your ideas for topics by Tuesday, March 19th people
can reserve them.
Presentation: Final Presentation is on the same topic as your last paper. It should be
no longer than 3 minutes so that everyone has a comfortable chance to talk. We will
use parts of two class periods. Tell your classmates who your essay’s audience is/was,
but you will be addressing your class. Feel free to use any of the classroom’s
presentation equipment but it’s not required. Write up an outline of your presentation
and hand it to the instructor before speaking.
Check your Syllabus for seven guidelines on giving your speech. The Presentation will
be judged on many issues, like audience contact, being organized, the outline, and
giving clear explanation of your Claim, Support, and Audience.
The essay will be judged on many issues including the effectiveness of its organization,
the concrete detail, sentences, paragraphs, spelling, punctuation, word choice, and
others.
