- There is no Final Exam in this course. In lieu of a Final Exam there is a Final Assignment. This Assignment is worth 30% of your final grade. You will be assigned a Chapter of the textbook (THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED AND ALL STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A CHAPTER ASSIGNED; IF YOU DO NOT – CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY).
- You are required to create a SLIDE DECK wherein you are teaching your peers your assigned Chapter’s terms, concepts, legal principles and their application and/or relevance to business or business law using examples, references to and use of other sources such as articles, caselaw, media, diagrams, charts, etc., where applicable or appropriate.
- Your slide deck will be accompanied by SPEAKING NOTES, notes or your speaking points (YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY FIT ALL OF THE NECESSARY INFORMATION ON A SLIDE SO YOUR SPEAKING NOTES IS WHERE YOU ACTUALLY GET TO EXPLAIN AND SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION) which extrapolate, elaborate, explain, analyze, synthesize and/or summarize the information presented in your slides.
⇒ For example, your slide may have a picture of an apple and include some facts such as:
APPLES MAKE UP HALF OF THE WORLD’S DECIDUOUS FRUIT TREE PRODUCTION
&
OVER 2,500 VARIETIES OF APPLES ARE GROWN IN THE UNITED STATES
Your speaking notes would then include additional information, for example:
Deciduous trees are plants that shed fruit or leaves when they reach maturity. Half of all deciduous fruit trees used for fruit production are apple trees. The countries that produce most of these trees are China, the United States, Poland, Italy, and Turkey.
Even though the crab apple is the only variety native to North America, thousands of types of apples are grown in the United States. Red Delicious, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Braeburn, McIntosh, Rome, Granny Smith, and Gala are a few of the most popular varieties grown in the U.S.

Your speaking notes would also include your thoughts or how you synthesize the information you are presenting. For example:
Apple trees already form a large part of local fruit production. While over 2,500 varieties are grown, only a fraction of these are known to the average consumer. There is an opportunity for producers and grocers to introduce the consumer and the greater public to lesser known but equally delicious apple varieties.
By doing so, apple producers may be better able to utilize their land and fruit trees. Possibly, they can rely less on pesticides or fertilizers if they can simply rely on different crops in different years as different varieties may have different levels of resistance to pests, may react differently to inclement weather or growing conditions, may require different soil composition, etc.
As you can see, your speaking notes is where you get to go more in-depth and can actually EXPLAIN concepts. Your slides are typically visual cues and/or tidbits of important information.
- You will be evaluated on the content and your comprehension – your understanding of the material in your Chapter so that you are conveying the material accurately to your peers. Strive for clarity, succinctness, comprehensiveness, creativity and originality. Your goal is to understand the content of your Chapter and to impart that knowledge to your peers in a way that simplifies, edifies and/or clarifies the material.
- RUBRIC/GRADING SCHEME: This is worth 30% of your final grade so will have 30 marks – 10 marks for content; 10 marks for comprehension; 10 marks for creativity, format, use of outside sources, etc.
NOTE: Shorter Chapters, given the lesser amount of content to work with, rather than being easier assignments (sorry!) will instead require greater use of examples, reference materials, analysis or application of principles (for example) to contend for top marks.
