You will explore organizational attributes and characteristics. The previous models have shown us how social and organizational attributes can interact with other characteristics of the work system to impede the achievement of the goals and objectives of the project. In this module, we are taking a closer look at what attributes you can look for in social and organizational dimensions and their impact on our goals.  Health care organizations are huge and complex. So, figuring out what attributes to describe them can be daunting. In this discussion, we explore two tools to identify organizational attributes.

Analysis

In this forum, there are two threads – Thread A is about identifying organizational factors (or attributes) across different stages of adoption. Thread B is about identifying organizational attributes related to organizational readiness. After you identify the organizational attributes for each thread, you will plug those attributes into Sittig And Singh and explore how the organizational attributes interact with the attributes in the other dimensions. 

Your goal for this discussion should NOT be summarizing the readings in your discussion posts. You should demonstrate your ability to identify and address challenges and problems using a socio-technical approach. You should be able to conceptualize the work system using socio-technical dimensions, identify goals and objectives of technology and organizational initiatives, conceptualize socio-technical issues/problems, and explore how interactions in the work system promote or impede the achievement of the goals and objectives. 

A. Organizational Factors Affecting IT Adoption

Health care organizations can be huge entities. Listing attributes that describe them can be a daunting task. Luckily, Avgar has a framework that addresses this need. In this discussion, you will identify organizational factors and explore how they affect IT adoption.

Initial post

Identify the organizational factors related to technical change for RUMC and, when appropriate, WMB for each stage of the adoption continuum (Investment, implementation, use) at each intra-organizational level (strategic, operational, frontline/workplace).

Response posts

Plug these organizational factors into Sittig and Singh, analyze how these attributes interact with attributes in the other dimensions, and analyze how they promote or hinder IT adoption in RUMC and WMB. You should contribute a minimum of three (3) repose posts. 

Unlike the previous discussions, we have not given you separate threads for each step of the analysis process. However, during the discussion, you will need to show how to use organizational factors for a sociotechnical analysis. So, make sure that your response posts include a problem statement and a conceptual model in addition to your exploration of interactions between organizational factors and other attributes that create issues related to your problem statement.

B. Explore the Effect of Organizational Readiness

In the excitement of planning for a new project, the team customarily plans for the implementation needs, such as requirements gathering, developing training plans, and planning hardware and software installation. However, it is not often that we take a step back and ask if our organization is ready for change. We look at what we need for the project but is the organization ready to support it?

In this discussion, you will identify organizational attributes related to readiness for change and explore how they interact with other attributes in your work system to achieve project goals.

Use Table 8.5 in Lorenzi and Riley to assess the organizational readiness of Riverview University Medical Center (RUMC).
