Stigma: is a characteristic/status others define and label as deviant. It is often considered a blemish on someone’s identity.

Discredited stigma: stigma in which individuals involved assume their differentness is known already or is evident on the spot.

Discreditable stigma: stigma in which individuals involved assume their stigma is neither known about nor immediately perceivable.

For your seventh praxis journal entry:

1. With regards to Week 7 readings, is discredited stigma or discreditable stigma more impactful and/or influential in the way society treats individuals? Explain and provide TWO concrete examples from the readings that support your conclusions.

2. Which type of stigma is most likely to be discriminated against, how and why? Elaborate.

3. How does the perception of visibility and/or ability affect the type of attention and/or aid that groups may receive? Are there certain “stigmatized” groups that are more likely to receive assistance, which groups and why? Identify and discuss at least TWO groups.

Your praxis journal entry should be at least ten full sentences long and demonstrate careful consideration and critical thinking, as well as, incorporate concrete examples from the Learning Unit 7 readings.
