Solved: Practical connection

Assignment:
Provide a reflection of at least 500 words (or 2 pages double spaced) of how the knowledge, skills, or theories of this course have been applied, or could be applied, in a practical manner to your current work environment. If you are not currently working, share times when you have or could observe these theories and knowledge could be applied to an employment opportunity in your field of study.

Requirements:

  • Provide a 500 word (or 2 pages double spaced) minimum reflection.
  • Use of proper APA formatting and citations. If supporting evidence from outside resources is used those must be properly cited.
  • Share a personal connection that identifies specific knowledge and theories from this course.
  • Demonstrate a connection to your current work environment. If you are not employed, demonstrate a connection to your desired work environment.
  • You should not provide an overview of the assignments assigned in the course. The assignment asks that you reflect how the knowledge and skills obtained through meeting course objectives were applied or could be applied in the workplace.

Still not sure what to write?

The following examples are based on a class that covers research design. That process is as follows:

  1. The foundation of all research is a problem to solve, a question to answer, or a hypothesis to prove.
  2. Collect the information needed for the analysis.
  3. Analyze the information.
  4. Collect the results, discuss the findings in terms of the problem, and conclude the research.

Example 1.

This works (this is a fictitious story invented as an example):

It is not the same, but this follows the same research design process. At my work, I handle new employees’ access to corporate software. The problem to solve is – what access does the employee need? The information is collected using our input form, where the employee writes down what department they work in, the role they fill, and what access they think they need. When they finish the form, I have to go over what they have provided because, more often than not, the employee is sure they need access to everything. After determining what might be missing, the access the employee should need from what they think they need, and comparing their access request to other employees in similar roles, I create their account and assign permissions. That is all along the lines of the analysis process in research design. While the discussion part is not a big component in this process, the results are. I write down the results – the permissions I assign and then forward the form to my manager. I also give the new employee their username and their initial password. Forwarding the form is like the conclusion of the research.

This example covers each area of the process, along with personal experience and physical activity in the workplace. If this were a paper, instead of a brief example, a lot more detail would be best, around 500 words.

Example 2.

This does not:

We do not do research at my work. If we did, we would follow the process in the class. Other departments might follow that process. If I ever work somewhere that has problems, I will use this design, too.

Nothing here demonstrates that the student understands what the process is or how to apply it. Additionally, who is ‘we’? That is not a personal connection. There is no physical activity here either.

Example 3.

This does not:

We have a lot of problems at my work. We collect information, too. Some analysts look at information, too. My work looks at what the analysts find and use it. They make decisions that way.

Part of the process is shown here, but not in a manner that demonstrates anything beyond a list of steps in the process. Nothing here demonstrates that the student understands what a problem is in this context. The same can be said for collecting and analyzing. Additionally, there is nothing personal. There is no physical activity here either.
