Objective: You will research and create a powerpoint based on one of the
Humanities topics provided. The objective of this project is for the
student to be able to successfully research and discuss a topic associated
with course material.
**No hard copies of the powerpoint or email submissions will be accepted in lieu
of an electronic submission to the dropbox. It must be turned in on Blackboard,
or it is a zero.
Requirements:
Research PowerPoint – The presentation must contain the following
information:
Slide One: What is your topic?
Slide Two: A hypothesis (your statement of belief, what you hope to
find out) or what questions you are going to answer here (don’t
just list mine, think of things you want to answer based off of
mine)
Slide Three through Five: Discuss your findings to the questions.
You can answer a question per slide. You can take more slides
if you need.
Slide Six: Final thought – this is located within your topic.
Slide Seven: Works Cited Page (you should have at least 4
resources, but more is better)
Minimum of 7 slides, Maximum of 15. You don’t have to explain everything. You
can do bullet points. Be concise. Just explain your point well.
Topics are on the next three pages. Keep scrolling.
Topics
1) Does Spartan or Athenian life better exemplify what it meant to be Greek? First,
define what it means to be Greek and then defend your position with specific details
and analysis as well as ample research. Look at lifestyles, government, economy
and the like. Final thought: Do you agree with this ideal? Why or why not?
2) Research gladiators and the gladiator games. Explain what the games are, what the
entail, who sponsors them and the architectural design of the Colosseum. Final
thought: Argue whether you are for or against the games, e.g. is the violence
necessary?
3) What are the most important religious themes common to Judaism, Christianity and
Islam? How do they compare? What are some similarities and differences? Final
thought: Based on your understanding of these three religions, do you think that
Islam is more similar to Judaism or to Christianity, or is it somewhere in between the
two? Justify your answer with specific examples and ample research.
4) Discuss the development of storytelling through tapestry. Focus on the Bayeux
Tapestry. How was it constructed? Why was it constructed and what story does it
tell? Who constructed it? Why were tapestries used to tell a story instead of frescoes
or paintings? Final thought: Was the Bayeux Tapestry biased? How?
5) How did women contribute to and experience the Renaissance? Did the
Renaissance lead to an improvement in women’s lives? Find one female
Renaissance creator (artist, writer, sculptor, architect, or patroness) to use as an
example of female contributions in the Italian Renaissance. Final Thought: Why do
you think there were so few women artists in the Renaissance?
6) Research one of the Northern Renaissance painters (Bosch, Grunewald, Durer, van
Eych, Campin). Discuss their art, their techniques and their overall contributions to
the Northern Renaissance. What external influences, if any, impacted their art?
What innovations did they create, if any? Then analyze at least one of their
paintings, which supports your research findings. Example: if a painter develops a
new radical painting technique, discuss the painting which exemplifies this technique
you have discovered in your research. Final thought: How did this artist contribute to
the overall Northern Renaissance movement? Be specific.
7) Listen to one of the Baroque masters (Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach, Gabrieli). Pick one
of their pieces/operas and listen to it, as if you were actually there at the moment
when they are first performing it. Doing some research on the composer and the
piece, the timeframe, and how the composer’s life/beliefs influenced the overall final
work. How did this piece contribute to the evolution of music? What did the
composer do to create something innovative in music? Be sure to include discussion
on movement, techniques, the emotional response you had to the piece, overall
sound design. Final thought: How has this composer and his work influence modern
day music? Can you parallel it to something to today?
8) Research William Hogarth and his Progresses. Choose one of the Progresses he
drew/printed and discuss the rise of satire in his works. How did his satire pieces
reflect the overall outlook of London and society in general? What was Hogarth
attempting to say in the piece you have chosen? Who or what did Hogarth blame for
this, if anyone? Final thought: How does satire influence images/art today? What
examples of satire in images do we have today?
9) Research one of the following modern movements: Impressionism, PostImpressionism, Expressionism, Abstract, Modern, or Post-Modern. What is the
overall point of the movement? What was the reception of the movement? Pick one
piece by an artist of this movement to discuss. Final thought: How was this artist and
his work influential to art? To culture? Do they influence the modern day world?
10) Choose one of the philosophers from the Enlightenment to research. How did their
work reflect the growing distress of European and/or American society? How did
their works influence societal development? Provide specific examples from their
works (text) which demonstrates their influence in contemporary society at the time.
Final thought: pick a quote from them that you feel reflects today’s world and explain
why.
11)Research Medieval medicinal practices. How sophisticated were the techniques and
the medicines? How did these practices shape the world of medicine today? Discuss
a few different medicines and/or medicinal practices that interest you. Final thought:
How did these practices influence the modern world’s medicine? Are there any
connections?
12)Choose one of the Renaissance “Ninja Turtles”—Leonardo, Michelangelo,
Donatello, and Raphael—and look at their contributions to the Renaissance. How
did their patrons influence their works? How did their works and lives influence
contemporary and modern artists? Final thought: Why are these four so prominent in
the world of Renaissance art?
13)Research one of the Native American tribes. Summarize their philosophy on life,
their rituals, their architecture (if any) and their art. Final thought: How did interaction
with other tribes and even settlers influence their art?
14)Research one of the following Central/South American groups: the Mayans, Incans,
or Aztecs. Discuss their contributions to art and architecture with their temples.
Connect it to other groups at this time, like Greeks or Romans. Final thought: How
alike are they? How different? x
15)Research Qin Shi Huang and the great burial tomb he created. How has the
discovery of this place re-written Chinese history and how the world looks at the
dynasties of China? What was the purpose of its design? Final Thought: What is the
artistic value of this find?
16)Research the Celts of the British Isles. Look at before and after their introduction to
Christianity. What are the differences between the before and after? How did this
influence their art and culture? Final Thought: Is this influence still present today?
How so?
17)Research the South Pacific Islanders and their development of tattooing. What is the
purpose of tattooing? Discuss how this practice has changed throughout history and
today. Are the reasonings for tattoos the same? How so? Final Thought: Is it truly
artistic in nature? Argue why or why not
