Using Evidence in Scholarly Writing

Ask the following key questions when making a decision about whether to use the evidence in your scholarly writing:

  • What is the source of the evidence? Is it a scholarly peer-reviewed journal?
  • What do you know about the author(s) of the evidence? Are they known to be experts in the evidence field?
  • Does the evidence come from facts/statistics or from the author’s opinion?
  • When was the evidence collected and by whom? Was the evidence published within the last five years?
  • Is there any suggestion of bias in the evidence? Does the author stand to gain something from presenting the evidence?
  • How does the evidence compare with other evidence you have read on the same topic? Does it seem logical?

Be skeptical! Always, always ask yourself this last question: “Why should I trust this evidence?” Your instructor certainly will ask you that question; critically evaluate the evidence so you are prepared with the best scholarly evidence!
